Planning consent: Alaska Factory roof extension, Bermondsey

Southwark Council has granted planning consent for our rooftop extension to Apartment 402 at Alaska Factory, within the Bermondsey Street Conservation Area.

The scheme transforms a 79m² one-bedroom apartment into a 110m² three-bedroom family home through a single-storey rooftop addition. Consent was granted in March 2026, following two pre-application rounds that progressively refined the massing, extended the setback from the adjacent Art Deco 600 building from 4m to 6.7m, and added privacy screening to the north-facing roof terrace.

The conservation and planning argument centred on the distinction between the genuinely historic 600 building - designed by Wallis, Gilbert and Partners in 1932, the practice behind the Hoover and Firestone factories on the Great West Road - and the host 400 building, which dates from the early 1990s. Establishing that distinction clearly was critical to securing the consent.

The approved addition uses white profiled metal cladding set behind the existing parapet on three sides, remaining largely invisible from the courtyard. The project moves on to technical design and construction procurement shortly once we have had time to celebrate.
