Andy Matthews Studio in the Architects Journal
Our Interval project in Edinburgh features in the AJ's March 2026 colour issue.
Our Interval project appears in Volume 253, Issue 03 of the Architects Journal, published 19 March 2026 under the theme of colour.
The piece covers our approach to the former café space at 220 Easter Road - stripping back unsympathetic additions to reinstate the original volumes of the 19th century building. Concealed features were uncovered and retained: a timber floor beneath plastic tiles, vertical wall panelling stripped and painted white.
The design centres on a trainer wall, window seating, fixed clothing rail, and display table with a found-object feel. Interval's signal orange runs throughout the scheme, marking the threshold between shop floor and changing room. A deep blue lowers the perceived ceiling height.
The project follows our earlier work for Tracksmith's UK store, and represents a continued focus on retail environments where materiality and restraint carry the brand narrative. We have now completed four running stores and looking forward to more in the near future!
